Untold: The woes of an Indian female indentured labourer in Mauritius in the 19th Century

When Slavery was abolished in Mauritius on February 1, the British who were administrating the country were in dire need of workforce for the sugarcane fields and factories. They decided to turn to India. In 1839, Indian female indentured labourer, Bibi Zuhoorun’s offered  a rare insight into early migration by testifying before the Committee Appointed by the Supreme Government of India to enquire into the Abuses Alleged to exist in exporting Indian labourers to other countries.
