Judicial Inquiry: Vinay Appanna denies meeting Kistnen the day he disappeared

Court of Moka

Vinay Appanna, Director and Shareholder of AV Techno-World Co Ltd, denied he killed MSM political agent, Soopramanien Kistnen. The witness was heard at the Court of Moka on Tuesday, 2nd of March in the judicial inquiry into the suspicious death of Kistnen. He also denied having met Kistnen on the day of his death, October 16, 2020, at La Louise Quatre-Bornes.

Azam Neerooa, the representative of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), confronted Vinay Appanna about the allegations made by Komadha Sawmynaden, and Vinnesen Subbaroyan during their auditions. They alleged that Vinay Appanna met Soopramanien Kistnen in the presence of Deepak Bonomally on the 16th of October 2020, at La Louise, Quatre Bornes. The Director of AV Techno-World Co Ltd denied those allegations. “Totally wrong”, he said.

He also rebuffed that it was Yogida Sawmynaden who introduced Kistnen to him.

Azam Neerooa also asked Vinay Appanna if he was aware of Soopramanien Kistnen being the “late MSM agent of Yogida Sawmynaden”, to which he answered: “Not at that time”

Azam Neerooa questioned Vinay Appanna about his whereabouts on the 16th of October 2020, the day Soopramanien Kistnen disappeared.

He replied that he has to check his emails before answering this question which led to Azam Neerooa inquiring about whether the witness had brought his phone with him to court.

The session was adjourned as Vinay Appanna’s driver was asked to bring the phone to court.

However, when the hearing resumed Vinay Appanna explained: “I don’t have my emails on this cell phone. But, during the break, I was able to remember that day”, he said.

The brother-in-law of the former director of STC replied that he was at his home in Ebene. Except that another witness, Deepak Bonomally, claimed to have been at his residence that evening, and that he was not there until 8 p.m. The latter explained that he was in front of Vinay Appana’s house in Ebène at 6 p.m. and that it was not until 8 p.m. that Vinay Appana arrived.

The representative of the DPP’s questioning also brought to light that Vinay Appanna and Yogida Sawmynaden were in contact with each other during the confinement period. “During the period of confinement, yes, after confinement probably”, said Vinay Appanna

The witness also confirmed that he has obtained two contracts, one from the Minister of Health for the supply of medical equipment, and masks, amounting Rs 44 million and, another from the Minister of Commerce, for the supply of Naso Swab Kits, amounting Rs 33 million.

Azam Neerooa pointed out that it was during that confinement period that those contracts were allocated.

After the representative of the DPP, it was Roshi Bhadain’s turn to question the witness. He asked Vinay Appanna if he killed Soopramanien Kistnen or ordered someone to kill him, which the witness denied.

Roshi Bhadain’s line of questioning also revolves around the security logbook of Vinay Appanna residence, Cyber Village Ebene, which is a “gated community”. Therefore there is only one entrance to Cyber Village Ebene, and it is guarded with a security officer who logs every entry and exit. However, Vinay Appanna argued that this logbook is not credible as some of its visitors do not appear in that logbook.

Vinay Appanna was also called to order by magistrate Vidya Mungroo-Jugurnath, for not having given his precise address.

Vinay Appanna is expected to return to the Court of Moka for further questioning on Wednesday the 3rd of March.
